The Praxis Embodied Writing Method
Most writers struggle because they treat creativity as a purely mental exercise. The Praxis Method reunites the mind with the body, transforming writing from a stressful "output" into a grounded, living practice.
We work through four essential pillars:
- The Full-Bodied Act: Learn to use your breath, nervous system, and physical sensations as creative data. We move past "thinking" about a story to feeling it move through you.
- Rootstock Wisdom: Trace the stories living in your lineage. By writing from your "roots" rather than just your reactions, your voice becomes more authentic, grounded, and purposeful.
- Somatic Literacy: Build a toolkit for life. Instead of "powering through" writer’s block, you’ll learn to regulate your nervous system and co-regulate with your work for a sustainable, burnout-proof practice.
- Dynamic Application: This isn't theory—it's action. Through somatic "sprints" and prompts, you will move through a cycle of embody → write → apply that yields immediate results on the page.

Kelly Burns, M.Ed., is a literacy researcher and educator dedicated to the intersection of equity and the written word. Since 2017 she has served as an Advanced Instructor in the Department of English at Colorado State University, where she mentors pre-service teachers in the art of teaching reading and composition. Her academic work at CSU emphasizes transformational justice and anti-oppressive literacy, bridging the gap between rigorous research and inclusive classroom practice.
A long-time collaborator and content creator for the National Writing Project, Kelly has spearheaded national initiatives advocating for sustainable teaching and critical literacy. Beyond the university, she serves as an Embodied Writing Coach for artists and creatives, using somatic practices to help writers navigate the "guts" of the creative process. Her approach is deeply informed by her certifications in Story as Medicine, Ritual and Ceremony, and The Wounded Healer (under Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés), as well as her poetry and mythology studies in Ireland and Costa Rica in The Poetry of Rest and Re-Imagination with David Whyte, and over five years of teaching the embodied writing pillars of The Praxis to Joyce Maynard’s writing students at Lake Atitlan, Guatemala.
Integrating a background in Somatic EMDR and Trauma-informed Somatic Coaching, Kelly’s work explores the somatic and therapeutic dimensions of storytelling. A published author in the English Journal and NCTE publications, she consistently creates human-centered, responsive spaces for both academic and creative expression. See more details here.
